About the event
The inaugural Data Centre Energy Summit brought together data centre operators, developers, energy providers, investors, policymakers and technology leaders to address one of the defining infrastructure challenges of the digital economy: delivering secure, scalable and sustainable power for the next generation of digital infrastructure.
Against a backdrop of accelerating AI adoption, increasing electricity demand and growing pressure on energy infrastructure, the Summit explored how industry, government and investors can work together to unlock the deployment of future data centre capacity.
EVENT OVERVIEW
The rapid growth of AI, cloud computing and digitalisation is transforming demand for data centre infrastructure.
Throughout the Summit, delegates explored the opportunities and challenges associated with powering future growth, including grid constraints, energy affordability, planning reform, sustainability requirements and long-term infrastructure investment.
A recurring theme throughout the day was that energy availability is increasingly becoming the primary constraint on data centre development. Speakers highlighted the need for new approaches to infrastructure planning, energy integration and policy development to support the UK's ambitions as a global AI and digital infrastructure hub.
KEY THEMES
Power Availability & Energy Security
As electricity demand continues to rise, access to reliable power is becoming the defining factor in determining where and how new data centres can be developed. Discussions focused on grid capacity, connection delays, energy procurement and long-term infrastructure planning.
AI, Digital Growth & Infrastructure Demand
Artificial Intelligence is reshaping electricity demand forecasts and accelerating the need for new digital infrastructure. Delegates examined how AI adoption is changing development requirements and creating new pressures across both the energy and data centre sectors.
New Models for Energy Integration
Speakers explored a range of innovative approaches including co-location with generation assets, private wire arrangements, microgrids, energy campuses and flexible demand management. These models are increasingly being viewed as potential solutions to grid constraints while improving resilience and speed of deployment.
Investment, Policy & Infrastructure Delivery
The Summit examined how planning reform, regulatory frameworks and infrastructure investment must evolve to support future growth. Participants highlighted the importance of coordination between government, regulators, investors, developers and utilities to accelerate deployment while maintaining energy security and sustainability objectives.
